TMJ Disorder: Causes and Treatment

TMJ disorder is a painful condition that affects people of all ages,  but it’s more common in women than in men, and in people between the ages of twenty and forty. Treating it is one of our specialties at Sleep Apnea & TMJ Solutions in Brentwood and Murfreesboro TN.

There are many symptoms of TMJ disorder, which include pain in the jaw (the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ). The pain may be in the head and neck region, too. It can come on seemingly overnight, it may gradually develop over time, or it may be something that comes and goes.

TMJ Causes

The cause of TMJ disorder may be easily identifiable, like a trauma. It also may be unknown. Some of the known causes include:

  • Repetetive teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism), often a result of stress
  • Constantly chewing on the same side, which can affect the jaw’s structure
  • Estrogen hormone, which can cause breakdown in the jaw’s cartilage
  • Medical conditions, including arthritis, a misaligned bite, or physical deformities

The causes of TMJ disorder may be hard to identify, but effective treatment is available. If you think you might have TMJ disorder, please schedule an appointment with us at Sleep Apnea & TMJ Solutions in Brentwood and Murfreesboro TN. Call us today!
