Sleep Apnea and Oral Appliances

A device called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most commonly-prescribed treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). But a lot of people find it more trouble than it’s worth, and stop using it. At Poss Sleep Apnea & TMJ Solutions in Brentwood and Murfreesboro TN we have a lot of success treating OSA with oral appliance therapy.

If you stop using the CPAP, of course, you’re defeating the purpose. What is it about CPAP that so many people don’t like?

For one things, it requires you to wear a mask while you sleep. The mask has a hose that connects to the machine, and blows a steady stream of air that keeps you breathing.

There are different types of masks, and newer designs are aimed at better comfort. But a lot of patients just can’t get used to wearing a mask while they’re in bed.

But the most common complaint about CPAP is air leaking from the mask. Air leaks reduce the air pressure, making them less effective.

The masks can also leave marks on your face, and some report getting rashes from them. Patients also complain that the machine itself is noisy.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliances, sometimes called mandibular advancement devices (MADs), look like athletic mouthguards. There are various designs, but most fit over the upper and lower teeth and are hinged together.

They work by repositioning the lower jaw and tongue into a more forward position. This helps keep the throat muscles from collapsing over the airway, which is what causes the sleep apnea problems.

Oral appliances are most effective in mild to moderate caes of OSA, so it begins with an accurate diagnosis. At Poss Sleep Apnea and TMJ Solutions in Brentwood and Murfreesboro TN, sleep apnea and its treatment is our specialty.
