TMJ Disorder: Painful and Common

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint, which is your jaw. Most of the time we use it without a second thought, but it is vulnerable to a painful condition known as TMJ disorder. We specialize in treating it at Poss Sleep apnea and TMJ Solutions in Brentwood TN.

It’s because of this joint that we can move the lower jaw around so much: not merely up and down, but forward and backward and from side to side. That very ability to move in so many directions can cause problems.

There are three common disorders with the TMJ:

  • Muscular. There are strong muscles on the side of the face and head, and they’re what make all that movement possible. Overuse can lead to tightness or pain. Stress can lead to clenching or grinding. Injuries can also affect these muscles.
  • Joint and Disc Displacement. There is a disc of soft tissue within the joint’s ball-and-socket portion. It can be damaged from trauma, such as dislocation. This can lead to pain when chewing, or simply opening your mouth. There may be a clicking or popping sound as you move your jaw.
  • Arthritis. Arthritis can affect any of your joints, including the TMJ. The joint’s cartilage deteriorates.

Each of these can be treated with specific types of therapy. If any of this sounds familiar, please call us at Poss Sleep Apnea & TMJ Solutions in Brentwood TN. We can diagnose the condition and develop a treatment plan that works. Call our officed to schedule an appointment today!
