Are You At Risk of Developing TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder does not discriminate: virtually anyone can get it. But there are certain risk factors that make some people more likely to get this painful condition, commonly known as TMJ disorder. It is our specialty, at Sleep Apnea & TMJ Solutions in Brentwood and Murfreesboro TN.

Risk factors means there are certain behaviors or conditions that put you at greater risk of developing TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder affects the jaw and head area, and can make something as ordinary as biting into a sandwich painful. Millions of Americans cope with the condition, which can be treated.

Risk Factors

Sometimes people develop TMJ disorder without having any of the following risk factors. And none of these factors mean you will get it: only that you’re at a higher risk.

  • Stress. People who are under stress in their daily life are at higher risk. Stress can bring on certain habits, like clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth. These can be unconscious, or even during sleep.
  • Medical conditions. Certain conditions make it more likely to develop TMJ disorder. These include arthritis, a head or facial trauma, and a misaligned bite.
  • Gender. While anyone can get TMJ disorder, it is far more common in women. In fact, women make up ninety percent of those who seek treatment.
  • Age. People between the ages of thirty and fifty make up the majority of TMJ disorder cases. Being in that age group does not, of course, mean you will get it.

Again, none of the risk factors described here mean you will develop TMJ disorder, only that it puts you at higher risk. If you notice any symptoms do not ignore them.
