Common symptoms include:

- Earaches. An earache is going to originate in the ear, right? That is often the case, but a persistent earache and the absence of an ear infection may be a sign of TMJ/TMD. What can be so misleading is the fact that the jaw joint (the TMJ) is right by the ear.
- Neck or back pain. TMJ issues can affect the surrounding area, like the neck or back. Your first thought may be to try a massage or relaxation techniques, but if if’s TMJ/TMD those will, at best, provide only temporary relief.
